Smell is the sense that reaches the parts of our brain linked to emotion and memory the fastest. That is why a scent can carry us to a memory or a mood within seconds. Aromatherapy Massage combines this powerful sense with the soothing touch of massage. So how does each aromatherapy oil make you feel, and how do you choose the right one?
What Is an Essential Oil?
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic extracts obtained from the flowers, leaves, bark, resin or roots of plants. Because they are so concentrated they are not applied directly to the skin; in massage they are diluted in specific ratios with carrier oils such as almond, jojoba or grapeseed. At O'SPA Sky, certified products with natural ingredients are used in all treatments and therapies.
Calming Scents
People whose minds race all day and who struggle to fall asleep usually lean towards soft, floral and woody notes.
- Lavender: The best-known oil in aromatherapy. Soft, clean and calm; a classic choice for evening sessions.
- Chamomile: A lightly sweet, gentle scent, preferred for sensitive skin and particularly tense days.
- Sandalwood: A deep, warm, woody note. It evokes a meditative calm, which makes it popular in longer sessions.
- Bergamot: A citrus, but its soft, floral side strikes a balance between calming and refreshing.
Energising and Refreshing Scents
For those who are tired but not sleepy and simply want to feel refreshed, brighter notes work well.
- Orange and grapefruit: Cheerful, bright and energetic scents that lift the mood in daytime sessions.
- Peppermint: Cooling and stimulating; used sparingly on the feet and legs for a sense of freshness.
- Lemongrass: Fresh and slightly sharp; especially popular on hot summer days.
Scents That Open the Breath
- Eucalyptus: Fresh, camphorous and clean. It pairs beautifully with steam room and sauna rituals.
- Tea tree: A sharp, herbal note, usually balanced with other oils.
- Rosemary: Herbal and invigorating; good for gathering your thoughts after a busy day.
How to Choose Your Scent
There is no single right answer in aromatherapy; the best scent is the one that makes you feel good. Before your session your therapist may ask you to smell a few options. Ask yourself:
- When I smell this, do my shoulders relax or tense up?
- After the session, do I want to sleep or carry on with my day?
- Does the scent remind me of something pleasant or something unpleasant?
Trust your first impression. A scent that makes you wrinkle your nose is not the right choice for you, no matter how "relaxing" it is said to be.
Things to Keep in Mind
Essential oils may be natural, but they are potent. Some oils are not recommended during pregnancy or for people with epilepsy, asthma, allergic skin or blood pressure issues, so always share your health information with your therapist. During pregnancy we recommend consulting your doctor before any massage or treatment. Some citrus oils can increase sensitivity to light, so avoiding strong sun after the session is a good habit.
