Talking to Your Massage Therapist: How to Share Pressure, Temperature and Preferences

23 September 2026 · 3 min read

Many guests feel during a massage that something isn't quite right but hesitate to say so. They think "I don't want to bother the therapist" or "maybe it's supposed to be like this" and spend the rest of the session mildly uncomfortable. Yet for a good therapist, feedback is the most valuable information for doing the job well. In this article we've gathered what you need to know about talking to your massage therapist.

Before the Session: The Most Important Five Minutes

The quality of a session is largely set in the short conversation before it starts. Share:

  • Your goal: To relax, or to ease tension in a specific area?
  • Problem areas: Shoulders, lower back, neck, legs… Where gets most tired?
  • Areas to avoid: Ticklish, sensitive or places you'd rather not be touched.
  • Your health: Injuries, surgery, pregnancy, skin sensitivity, blood pressure, varicose veins, allergies.
  • Past experiences: Which massages have you liked or disliked before?

How to Describe Pressure

"Firm" and "soft" mean different things to different people, so a simple scale helps: on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 is almost no pressure and 10 is unbearable. For most guests, the ideal range is between 5 and 7. Saying "This feels like an 8, could you ease off a little?" is a very clear direction for your therapist.

Remember: more pain does not mean more benefit. Too much pressure can make the muscles tighten to protect themselves. The aim is "an intensity that feels good".

Don't Hesitate During the Session

These sentences are completely normal and your therapist will welcome them:

  • "That's a bit much here, could it be lighter?"
  • "Right there, could you stay a little longer?"
  • "I'm cold, could I have another blanket?"
  • "Could you turn the music down a little?"
  • "I'd like to rest without talking."

The last one matters. Preferring silence is not rude; many guests experience the most valuable part of a massage in quiet minutes.

Room Conditions

In the soundproofed massage suites at O'SPA Sky, temperature and lighting are adjusted for each guest. If you have a preference about table warming, room temperature, light intensity or the scent of the oil, just mention it at the start. In scent-focused sessions such as Aromatherapy Massage, you can decide by smelling different oils; see also our guide to aromatherapy oils.

Privacy and Comfort

Throughout the massage only the area being worked on is uncovered; the rest of your body stays draped. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, saying so is your natural right. Therapists are trained for this, and your comfort comes first.

Feedback After the Session

When the session ends, sharing what felt good and what could be different makes your next appointment even more personal. Our regular guests' preferences are noted, so you don't have to explain everything from scratch on each visit.

A good massage is an experience two people create together. Browse our services and send us any questions; O'SPA Sky at Skyland Istanbul welcomes you every day from 09:00 to 23:00.
