One of the most important factors in the quality of a massage is the thin layer between the therapist's hands and your skin: the massage oil. The right oil keeps movements flowing, nourishes the skin and makes the experience more enjoyable. In this guide to massage oils we look at the most common carrier oils and tips for choosing.
What Is a Carrier Oil?
Carrier oils are light oils obtained from the seeds, kernels or fruit of plants. They form the base of a massage, and in aromatherapy sessions they are used to dilute concentrated essential oils. At O'SPA Sky, certified products with natural ingredients are used in all treatments and therapies.
Common Carrier Oils
- Sweet almond oil: The massage classic. Light, easy to spread and softening. A good choice for dry skin. Not suitable for people with nut allergies.
- Jojoba oil: Technically a liquid wax, similar to the skin's own oil. Light with a low tendency to clog pores; often chosen for combination and oily skin.
- Grapeseed oil: Very light and quickly absorbed. Not sticky; ideal in hot weather or if you're going back to work after your massage.
- Coconut oil: The fractionated form is liquid and light, giving a slippery glide. Rarely, it can cause a skin reaction in sensitive people.
- Sesame oil: Known for its warming character; used in traditional practices, especially in cold weather.
- Argan oil: Rich and nourishing; usually blended with other oils.
Choosing by Skin Type
- Dry skin: Sweet almond, argan blends
- Oily and acne-prone skin: Jojoba, grapeseed
- Sensitive skin: Unscented, simple formulas; test a new oil on a small area
- Plans after your massage: Light, fast-absorbing oils
With Essential Oils
Aromatherapy Massage uses essential oils added in set ratios to a carrier oil. We describe the character of scents such as lavender, eucalyptus and orange in our guide to aromatherapy oils.
Allergies and Sensitivity
If you have a nut allergy, skin sensitivity, eczema, or have reacted to an oil before, always tell your therapist at the start of the session. A suitable, simple alternative will be chosen. If you feel itching or burning during the session, say so immediately.
Oil Temperature
At O'SPA Sky, massage oils are used at a comfortable temperature so they don't feel cold on the skin. In sessions such as Volcanic Hot Stone Massage, heat is part of the experience.
After the Session
It can be pleasant to wait a while for the oil to absorb. If you want to shower straight away, choose lukewarm water; very hot water can dry the skin. If you don't want an oily feel, you can ask for a lighter oil at the start.
Using Oils at Home
If you want to give yourself or your partner a simple massage at home, a plain carrier oil is enough. Don't apply essential oils undiluted, and seek expert advice during pregnancy or with health conditions.
