A Massage and Spa Guide for Over-50s: A Comfortable, Safe Experience

25 September 2026 · 3 min read

Massage and spa are enjoyable at any age, but the body's needs change over the years. Joints may be more sensitive, skin thinner and recovery slower. In this massage and spa guide for over-50s we explain how to make the experience both comfortable and safe.

Why It's Worth It

Regular massage remains valuable self-care time in later life too. The benefits our guests mention most often:

  • Less stiffness in the mornings
  • Relaxation in the shoulders, neck and lower back
  • Falling asleep more easily
  • Feeling good and the calm that comes with touch

Before the Session: Share Your Health Information

In this age group the most important step is to share your health openly with your therapist:

  • Blood pressure, cardiovascular conditions and diabetes
  • Blood thinners (which can increase the risk of bruising)
  • Osteoporosis or joint replacements
  • Varicose veins and vascular issues
  • Recent surgery or treatments
  • Skin sensitivity

If you have a chronic condition, we recommend consulting your doctor before your massage. This information lets your therapist set the right pressure, position and areas to avoid.

Which Massage?

  • Swedish Massage: With balanced, adjustable pressure, one of the safest places to start.
  • Aromatherapy Massage: Soft, flowing movements and calming scents.
  • Reflexology: A comfortable foot-focused option that doesn't require lying face down.
  • Indian Head Massage: A gentle treatment for the head, neck and shoulders that can also be done seated.

Deep tissue massage and intense heat treatments should be considered with your doctor's approval and your therapist's input.

Small Adjustments for Comfort

  • Position: If lying face down is hard, treatment can be done lying on your side or back. Support cushions ease the neck, lower back and knees.
  • Pressure: It's best to start softer and adjust as needed.
  • Warmth: Room temperature and table warming are set to your preference.
  • Getting on and off the table: Take your time; ask your therapist for support if needed.

Sauna, Steam and Hammam

Heat areas are enjoyable but need more care with age. With blood pressure or heart conditions, consult your doctor first; when using them, keep sessions short, drink plenty of water and avoid sudden hot-cold transitions. See our sauna guide for details.

After the Session

After your massage, sit up slowly, rest for a few minutes and drink water. Relaxing in the Relax Lounge with herbal tea is the most pleasant way to round off the experience.
