Is Tenderness After a Deep Tissue Massage Normal?

26 September 2026 · 3 min read

If you've felt a mild ache in your back or shoulders the day after a deep tissue massage, you're not alone. It's something our guests ask about often. In this article we explain why tenderness after a deep tissue massage happens, how long it lasts and when to pay attention.

What Is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep Tissue Massage is a technique applied with slow, firm pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle. It's chosen for chronic tension and stubborn knots. At O'SPA Sky it lasts 50 minutes. We explain who it suits in detail in this article.

Why Does Tenderness Happen?

Deep pressure is a stimulus the muscles aren't used to. Just like the mild ache the day after an exercise you haven't done in a while, the body responds to it. This feeling usually:

  • Shows up as a mild ache or "worked" feeling in the treated area,
  • Becomes noticeable in the first 24 hours after the session,
  • Eases on its own within 24–48 hours.

It can be more noticeable for first-timers or after a long break, and it usually lessens with regular sessions.

When Is It Not Normal?

Contact your therapist, and see a doctor if needed, if you have:

  • Severe or increasing pain
  • Tenderness lasting beyond 48–72 hours
  • Marked bruising or swelling
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness
  • Fever or general malaise

Reducing Tenderness

  • Communicate during the session: If the pressure goes beyond what "feels good", say so. More pain doesn't mean more benefit. For practical ways to describe pressure, see our guide to talking to your therapist.
  • Gentle movement: A short walk and light stretches the next day support circulation.
  • Warm shower: A warm shower or bath relaxes the muscles.
  • Water and rest: Enough fluids and good sleep ease recovery.
  • Postpone heavy training: Avoid intense exercise on the same day as your session.

When Planning Your Massage

  • Don't schedule a deep tissue massage right before an important race, performance or event.
  • If it's your first time, you may prefer to start with medium pressure.
  • If you take blood thinners or have varicose veins or a vascular condition, be sure to mention it.

Alternatives

If you don't like deep pressure but want effective relaxation, Volcanic Hot Stone Massage offers a softer route with the help of heat. For general relaxation, Swedish Massage is a good choice.
